I'm slowly trying to accomplish new projects.

One of which I have pieces completed, here's one piece:

I am also making a couple coptic stitch books. Kind of like this book on my etsy. But not quite like it. These two books are made out of scrap paper from other books and wood covers. As soon as I get around to drilling the holes they'll be done soon after.

I also want to make some mini versions of the 16mm covered lightbox that was part of my thesis show a year ago. I think I want to go with those led lights you press to turn on, but I'm trying to find the right design for it... I'm working on it.

I'm also a slow and bad Portuguese student. But I'm working on that too.

Sunspot Café

I will be working at the Sunspot Café soon. As soon as it is properly inspected and all the employees are trained that is. I've been helping out in the decorating and painting of the place in the last few weeks. I've also designed a coupon and two gift certificates that will be printed and used once we've opened. I'm really excited to start working there, it's going to have fantastic, mostly vegetarian food, treats like cupcakes and gluten-free baked delicacies. And it's a two second walk from my house!

Here's what I've designed:

The logo is different in the certificates because it changed, and I didn't design the logo, I'm pretty sure the owner did that. It was nice to work with.

Please don't try to print these off yourself. One, because we're going to print them on specific paper and two, because that's rude.

So those post-it notes didn't go very far after I posted about them. But I did continue to collect security envelopes from my former employer.

I used most all of them to fold into shirts, my favorite thing to do with paper I collect.

Here's a sampling of some:


Shirts

I submitted my proposal to use them in a wall installation of 100 shirts, behind them will be a graph, filled in red for the percentage of unemployed people in the United States at the time of installation. Right now it's at 9% (and that's a drop).

With the remainder of the shirts I made a piece reflecting on the wastefulness of mailings and paper that gets recycled or even filed in office settings. It's a waste of time and space in my opinion... but for records it's necessary.

I just wish there was some way to make it obvious that I am credited in other videos that are not on my account. And I wish there were ways to organize the order of the videos.

Some updates:

1. I am not working at Infamous Graphics anymore. I worked there for about one month. It was a good experience but I couldn't afford not to take the offer of employment I received at John G. Waite Associates. JGWA is an architect firm in downtown Albany. They work in restoration. I am their new admin assistant/receptionist.

2. I showed my work in Troy, NY. "Collar Works is a non-profit art gallery dedicated to the support of emerging artists exhibiting culturally relevant contemporary artworks; expanding the current art vernacular in the capital region by providing all the sophistication of the global art market without the pretension." They got a space after showing in different spots around Troy. It is an old building that they've fixed up into a great space to show work.

SCREENPRINTING

I started work at Infamous Graphics on Monday (August 16th) and it was an exhausting week. Not only had I spent the entire summer playing video games and on the computer looking at Albany's craigslist but I have never had a full time job before in my life.

But I managed and I'm enjoying it, in spite of my sore back, feet, legs and hands everytime I get home.

Look at this massive stack I printed on Friday (all by myself on the automatic press):

Today I even screenprinted on my own time, with my own screens and using the first technique I learned how to silkscreen with: contact paper and an x-acto knife.

I was helping out Sina Hickey, founder of the NY division of PaperGirl and friend of Rod and I and who is super busy right now and needed some of the pressure of these openings taken off of her. PaperGirl was started in Germany and it's an exhibition and distribution of art to the public all in one. This is the second year in a row that the New York division has been doing it. This year they've branched off into NYC as well. Here are the dates for the exhibitions. The first opening is this Tuesday night if you're in New York City.

I modified the design to fit the paper girl and text into a triangle shape like the shape on the end of the girl's bike. Now I'm waiting for them to dry so I can cut them in half diagonally tomorrow before work.

Since Graduation...

Alright so since I've graduated from MICA I moved in with my boyfriend in Albany. I greatly enjoy living with him and getting to spend time together, however I am not too fond of the town.

Albany is basically a collection of restaurants and malls and a big government building. It also looks like a video game when you drive into it:

It was a bad sign when the first night staying in Albany my dad's car got broken into and his blackberry and GPS were stolen... and after four years of a crimeless existence in Baltimore. Funny how that is. And I did have pictures of that... but I accidentally deleted most of an album that I uploaded one day.

I got two jobs in restaurants. Both of which lasted a couple weeks. I could write mean things about both, in fact I just did and erased it... but basically one made me miserable and the other was more relaxed but the owners are broke as shit and had no right hiring anyone.

So as far as art goes I haven't made a whole lot. Rod and I invested all our time together into arranging our place so it was livable... including the couple weeks where we had two recliners stacked up and a twin sized bed in our tiny hallway. Pretty miserable.

I finally got the back room cleared out and organized enough to do work in. I've just been making some books for my etsy there. I have come up with some art ideas. Like how I would love to set up a studio to make paper. And I have had some sleepless nights because all I can think about are ideas for making things like screenprinted t-shirts that incorporate the designs of the netflix origami shirts I make... or how I could possibly make an artist book I made for fibers class into a limited edition artist book. I'm sure a pin-up book with a nylon stocking cover would sell, even at steep prices. Maybe. I just can't afford that investment.

But essentially I am very broke. I haven't worked. I start my new job on Monday at infamous graphics Thank God!!! But I am going to try and help Rod pay his tuition. Because he's an international student he has to pay full tuition. Because he doesn't have a green card he can't take out a loan in his own name. Because he's in the SUNY Albany grad sculpture program they don't cover his entire tuition. Basically everything is working against him right now. This town is a black hole, but we will make it out alive.

Wow that got pretty depressing. Sorry.

I'll try to make art when I have money I promise!

Spinning Wool Video

(to follow up from the posts previous about the wool I was working with)

Now I'm working on hats for myself, my boyfriend (Rod) and my mom made out of the wool I spun. And I'm embroidering the phrase "YOU'RE PERFECT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE" into the inside brim of the hats. According to a very excited counselor it's cognitive behavioral therapy.

I'm still debating over how to display this as artwork, I think photo documentation is necessary. I'm thinking the documentation should be in conflict with trying to live with the phrase in mind.

Spun Wool

It took about 15 hours to spin and I have the film of the single framed pile of wool diminishing, it's several seconds long. I'll post it up when I can get a dirty dub of it, or when I finish my final film piece and do a dirty dub of that.

I spun wool all weekend, averaging about 6 hours per day, and I single framed the endeavor, every time I picked up a clump of wool and spun it I took a shot of it. I went through about 7ft of 16mm film.

I'm working on a documentary, its starting off point for subject matter was Craigslist Lost + Found, I contacted people who posted to that section of the website and got phone interviews with them about how successful they believe craigslist is at connecting people with their things, how they felt when they lost their pets and if they found what they were looking for how that happened.

Here's a photo taken and edited by my friend Jonnie, the rest of the photos are on his website: destroytoday.com. These are some of the books that I made for uniformity/what I'm now selling for Art Market. I don't know if I sold any of those, I was there for the first hour of the sale and I sold one Japanese stab bound book... I some how got put in charge of filing the inventory sheets, cutting the tags and handing it to the customer, marking what they bought on the inventory sheets and packaging.. and I'm not even a printmaking major! I don't know what I'm doing with their prints, I feel like I might wreck them. But it was alright anyways.

Art Market/End of Semester Crazies

So Art Market is next week, I'm busy prepping all of my work to sell for that instead of, you know, doing my final projects. That consists of me making Japanese stab bound books constantly. Contrary to the previous two years I'm not really selling a lot of knitted things. I'm selling four to be exact-compared to about 140 books that's not a whole lot at all. I just haven't been knitting at all, kind of lost interest a bit and lost time.

But I do have my final crit for uniformity next week-ahhhh!!! I have something in the works for it, need to talk to my teachers about it tomorrow.

As for Intro to Newer Genres, which I had today, I feel a little more lost, but my work for that class has been a reflection of my life this semester, so that makes sense that I would feel that way. I need to do something else for the class but I really don't think I can do it in the next week, not at all.

As for academics I have some weird assignment for Doc Film that I'm going to do at the last moment, and a test on the same day-thanks! And I'm pretty much done for Arts of Native Americas. I have a pretty long paper to write for Firmin, who is a tough grader and wants a concise paper-that's difficult for me-and he's also my minor adviser so I kind of want to impress him.

I'm going to be sad next semester when I don't have access to the Dolphin Building, it has such great facilities for making books and paper. I'll miss it a lot.

Ergonomic Production

For my class, Uniformity, I have been producing these objects every week for 2 hours per week. My maximum output for those 2 hours is 15 books. I reached that peak this past week on Monday, November 3rd. Our public performance of our production will be taking place next Friday, November 21st. It is titled "Laboring Hands for Institutional Awareness." It's a fairly boring title, I didn't vote for it. But it should be an interesting performance, we'll be working away all day producing our objects-and two of us will be producing dance/music.

I am also planning on selling these notebooks during the Art Market this year. I need to make myself a business card for that.

Antique Sewing Machine (4/19/08)

My final wood project was going to be building a wooden mailbox to be a recycling box but Ken didn't approve, he didn't think it related directly to my previous fort project. So I chose to do the alternative to an extension of a previous project which is to take an object and obstruct its function by changing its aesthetics or something else (I forget the exact language he used). And it must be mostly wood or wood by-products in the end. I needed some wooden furniture badly, I was hoping for bookshelves or a table. So I joined FreeCycle Baltimore. There was an offer for a solid Mahogany dresser (for free!!!) in Catonsville. I begged Spencer to drive me to go pick it up and he did and we brought Brian. But on the way we took a wrong turn and ended up going back and into some neighborhood, and there on a corner was this huge yard sale with tons of antique, wooden furniture. So we stopped, of course. Everything was so expensive, like hundreds of dollars. But there was a small table labeled "Antique Sewing Machine 20-"... it was one of those pop-up sewing machine tables! And it worked! So I bought it, I didn't even barter like an idiot. So then there was positively no way we could fit that dresser into the car but we had to go tell the family that we would pick it up later. So we went there and we measured to make sure the thing would fit in Spencer's car and everything. It looked to be in excellent condition. We promised to be back in 45 minutes. But of course that did not happen. Spencer was starving and complaining about the noises his car was making. Brian and I moved the sewing machine inside, into the dining room. Spencer left to go get Meyerhoff food and I was looking for my shoes, I thought they might be by the sewing machine. So I walked into the dining room and was walking around the table when I stepped on a needle that went half way into my foot. Spencer was already gone but Adam and Brian were upstairs. I limped to the couch calling for Spencer, thinking he was just out the door I even called him but he didn't answer. After a little bit Adam and Brian came downstairs and helped me out. Spencer called back and came back and then Brian pulled out the needle, after figuring out that it had bent. So needless to say this sewing machine has already cost me-$20 and a healthy foot. I wasn't going to use it for my wood altering project. But now I am, for revenge if nothing else. But I also respect it as an antique and as pretty awesome design. So I will not just turn it into splinters, I will make it into beautiful sculpture, hopefully it does not have a jinx on it that will cause a bad critique or worse. Here are some pictures:

This was a really fun and exciting project, I'm really glad I did it. I was inspired by Made in Tokyo-a book about the strange architecture in Tokyo that utilizes every unthinkable plot of land.

Bookmaking

This book was a part of Mail Art Fun Club, I sent it to an address in North Carolina. The cloth on the front is from a performance piece by a graduate student, where there were ribbons hanging down around a cast figure shaped sculpture and they were all suspended and after a speech by an actor and the artist they put the feet of the sculpture on the ground and a whole bunch of people went in and cut away at the ribbons. They told us to take the remnants and mail them to people to ask for forgiveness, or to ask for the strength to forgive. I mailed it on this book because I was supposed to send art in March but I did not make it or send it until the beginning of April. The inside pages are readings from my Urban Theory class, poems from Walt Whitman and various other writers.

Puzzle=had to be 7 pieces or under and only three rip cuts. My piece is 5 pieces of equal size, most of them are square to each other except one diagonal. Emphasis was on minimalism and pretty air... had to activate space.

Intro to Sculpture Spring 2007

This is the a video I did second semester freshman year for Intro to Sculpture with Ledelle Moe-Marshall. The garment I constructed out of metal and plastic forks, knives and spoons and wire. The performance was filmed with my boyfriend Spencer eating spaghetti in the Meyerhoff dorms second floor lounge. The idea was to have a ceremony based off of a limiting garment, made out of utensils to help you that now constricted you. It was a study in human behavior.

I made this video first semester freshman year for the freshman General Fine Arts class. It was the backdrop of a performance piece in which my class ripped apart all of the knitting I had done in the two weeks leading up to the critique. It was pretty rough, but a good experience. Unfortunately I don't have footage of the performance. Also the performance did not include the sound, it was just visual, but as a video it works better with the sound even though it really doesn't stand by itself well.
